How to Toilet Train Your Puppy in the First Few Days

❤️ Start As You Mean to Go On

The first few days with your new puppy are exciting — but they are also the most important time to start good habits.

Toilet training doesn’t need to be complicated.

👉 It comes down to routine, repetition, and reward.

Get this right from day one, and your puppy will learn quickly.

Routine Is Everything

Puppies don’t know where to go — you have to show them.

Take your puppy outside:

  • First thing in the morning

  • After eating

  • After drinking

  • After playing

  • After waking from sleep

  • Before bedtime

👉 In the first few days, this can mean every 1–2 hours

The more consistent you are, the faster they learn.

🚶 Always Use the Same Spot

Take your puppy to the same area each time.

  • Keep it calm

  • Stand still

  • Give them time

👉 This helps them associate that place with going to the toilet.

🎉 Reward Immediately

Timing is everything.

The second your puppy goes:

✔ Praise them warmly
✔ Give a small treat

👉 They must understand:
“This is exactly what I should do.”

🔁 Repetition Builds Habits

Toilet training is not about luck — it’s about consistency.

  • Same routine

  • Same place

  • Same reward

👉 Repeat this every day and your puppy will quickly understand.

🛑 Accidents Will Happen (And That’s OK)

In the first few days, accidents are normal.

If it happens:

  • Stay calm

  • Clean it up - Apple Cider Vinegar diluted 50% water is a good antibacterial liquid, cheap and prevents the pup from remarking the same spot.

  • Do not punish

👉 Your puppy is learning — not being naughty.

🚫 Why We Don’t Recommend Puppy Pads

It may seem easier, but puppy pads can actually slow training down.

They teach your puppy:
👉 It’s okay to go inside the house

This creates confusion when you later want them to go outside.

👉 It’s much better to start as you mean to go on — outdoors only.

🧠 Watch for the Signs

Your puppy will usually show signs when they need to go:

  • Sniffing the floor

  • Circling

  • Suddenly wandering off

  • Restlessness

👉 As soon as you see this — take them outside.

😴 Night-Time Routine

Puppies may need to go during the night.

  • Keep things calm and quiet

  • Take them straight outside

  • No play or excitement

👉 Then back to bed.

❤️ Be Patient – It Will Click

Every puppy learns at a different pace.

But with:
✔ Routine
✔ Repetition
✔ Reward

👉 Most puppies make great progress within the first few days.
