Prepare For Your Dogs Arrival
-
So now you have chosen your new furry friend we have to get the dog home to you. We use our own transport company. The van is a purpose built and fitted Pet Carrier Mercedes Sprinter with climate control- GPRS - Video - food and water and two crew members. The van is Type 2 Authorised and inspected by DEFRA. We will in most cases deliver to your door (occasionally a meeting point can be arranged. The pets will travel across Europe and we will provide updates whenever we can. They will enter U.K on the Euroshuttle form Calais into Folkstone which is the shortest route to the U.K. Generally they will enter U.K early in the morning and the pets will need to be seen by animal welfare and documents inspected before we can begin our deliveries. When we have passed all pet controls we will provide you all with your E.T.A. We will try to give you some idea a couple of days before departure but we have no control at the border of the time they wish to hold us there. A Whatsapp group chat will be set up so you are able to keep informed and up to date where the van is.
PLEASE be prepared with a lead (they will be wearing a collar or harness on arrival). We always recommend two leads - one on attach to the collar and a second slip lead to extra security as they may be a little nervous in high traffic areas. You must connect these leads BEFORE the dog is handed to you from the crew. Remain calm to reassure the dog, let it adjust to its new surroundings - they will probly enjoy a period of time in your garden before entering your home
-
All dogs are different, some will come to your home and it will appear as if they have always been there and others will be scared and want to spend sometime outside enjoying stretching their legs and sniffing their new home. They may want to enter your home and a crate is a great idea for a safe space (this should be covered at the tops and sides initially with a sheet or something - makes a safe natural environment) ALWAYS have water freely available where ever they choose to go. Just let your new pet settle and adjust and it will soon decompress and come to you in it OWN time
-
Take your time is the secret here. Some pups will be like a statue, some will drop to the floor, buck on the lead or simply refuse to move their legs. They all get there in the end with patience - just stand with them and wait - no eye contact be silent and when they get up or move - “its okay - good boy” in a high pitched voice and a treat will eventually work. Recall work should be practiced on a long lead until you are confident to let your pet off safely in a enclosed space. you can carry them to the car and let them enjoy the quiet of a park or country walk if you are in a busy noisy area. REPEAT - REPEAT - REPEAT
Join dog classes its great fun and dogs generally love to meet other dogs.

Some plants in your garden may be poisonous to dogs - do your google research. There are many reported cases of dog poisoned with garden fertilisers. potting compost, garden waste piles ,growbags, compost heaps. snail and slug pellets, lime , hormone growth powders. lawn feeds etc . Please make sure all of these things are NOT in reach of your dog.
IF YOU KNOW OR SUSPECT OYUR DOGS HAS EATEN ANYTHING FROM THE GARDEN OR OUT ON WALKS - PLEASE SEEK URGENT VET CARE

Always have fresh water available. The secret to bonding with your dog is simple FEED FROM THE PALM OF YOUR HAND a few biscuits before putting the bowl of food down. They my refuse - simply return after 5 minutes and offer again - keep repeating until they take it - in dog language this tells them they can trust you and when they accept the doggy bond begins - this process is good to continue in your daily routines when feeding.
We recommend a puppy or dog sensitive stomach dry complete mix initially as their tummies may be a little upset from traveling and new experiences in the U.K - small portions to begin with and feed three times a day for pups and twice for adult dogs - weigh the recommended amount out. You can than progress to your preferred feeding routine gradually by adding this in with the complete biscuit. Do not make the last feed too late and do not leave nighttime food down - limit the treats you give. This way you will not have accidents to clear up. Routine is everything so if it is working keep doing it - if it is not change it.
-
It is important your dog has a safe space - a crate is a really good idea- NEVER shut the door it is not a punishment but only a place it can call its own to be quiet and safe.
Look around your home - electricity cables - phones - remove breakable objects - close toilet lids - ensure cleaning products and medications are secured in cupboards and not left out. Some indoor plants may also be harmful to dogs - check the labels and do your google research. Remind the kids not to leave their toys around !
-
Please register your dogs microchip number as soon as you can on arrival to your home. This is easy and not expensive. There are many companies that you can use online or through your vet. Our adopters have used this one previously www.animaltracker.co.uk
-
Please DO NOT worm OR FLEA treat on arrival - this has already been done prior to departure by our vet and details will be in the passport. All adult dogs should be wormed every 3 months - we recommend you wrom your dog 2 weeks after arrival and flea treat 4 weeks after arrival. Follow this every 3 months on a schedule or advice from your vet.
-
This blood test is a common way to test for Heart worm and 3 brown tick related blood diseases. All our dogs are tested prior to departure and the results are in the back of the passport. This test really should be preformed yearly on all dogs especially if you walk in countryside areas or areas where lots of dogs use in the case of heartworm.
4D Tests for :
Heartworm - Mosquito
Lyme Disease - Brown Tick
Ehrlichia - Brown Tick
Anaplasma - Brown Tick
All these disease are easily cued with 30 days antibiotics and will be supplied or completed before travel.
-
All pets are fully vet checked before departure and certified as fit and healthy. The vaccinations will be up to date and it really isn’t necessary unless you are concerned that the dog is suddenly unwell. Please feel free to make contact with us.
All vaccines, tests and information about your dog will be in the passport.
-
Not a problem in Bulgaria currently - however U.K vets are increasingly insisting that this test is done before they will attend to your pet - and they charge a considerable amount for this test - we can offer this very cheaply and it will be in the pet passport completed before departure at an additional charge.
How is brucellosis spread? Dog-to-dog spread of brucellosis occurs most often through breeding and by contact with vaginal discharges, semen, birthing fluids, and urine. Contact with an infected dog's blood, milk, saliva, and poo are less common sources of infection
